Cost of living hits renovation budgets differently in every metro

Our regional cost index ranges from 0.88x in Indianapolis to 1.45x in San Francisco — a project that costs $10,000 nationally can run anywhere from $8,800 to $14,500 depending on where you live.

How we build these estimates

Every figure on this site starts from national average pricing compiled from contractor cost surveys and industry cost reporting, then localized with a regional construction-cost index built from metro-level labor rate and material cost data. Ranges are reviewed and updated periodically. Full detail is in our methodology. *National renovation spend figure is a broad industry estimate cited for context and rounded for readability; it is not used in any per-project calculation on this site.
